Assignment 3 - "Play: Toy and Object of Play" ( Individual )
Task
I need to create a toy according to my assigned body part and toy must be created by using recycled, found and daily objects. I need to illustrate them while creating the toy by using four stages which are Empathy, Define, Ideation and Prototype. A video demonstration and an infographic poster are also involved in the submission.
Progress
Duration: 7 weeks ( But I only used six weeks for this assignment )
The progress is also consisted with four stages which are Empathy, Define, Ideation and Prototype.
Week 1
I received the assigned body part which is neck and shoulder. It was looked hard at the beginning then after listening to lecture, I finally understood the whole relationship between the assigned body part and the toy. So, I roughly drafted out the whole plan of the Empathy.
Week 2
I did some further researches on the Empathy then I finalised all the informations and started drawing the Empathy in A4 papers. In Assignment, I also used the hybrid method which is as same as the first assignment. During drawing the Empathy, I suddenly had a whole idea for the final outcome! Then, I drew the elements that I wanted to use in the Empathy such as Table Top Arcade Machine, Basketball Shooting Machine and many more. I finished the Empathy in this week!
Week 3
I continued with the Define as well and I loved to start Define with narrative so I did the same style in this assignment. I wrote out my narrative and the reasons of using the elements in the draft. The narrative is drawn in A4 papers but some images are inserted digitally. Other parts of Define are completed digitally. Define is finished in this week!
Week 4
Week 5
Week 6
I continued with my Ideation in this week. The first ideation was quite easy for me because I already had the final outcome in my mind. The toughest things among all the parts in this assignment is the second and third Ideation. I had some ideas for the second and third one but is quite similar to the first one. So, after getting some advices from Mr Paul in tutorials which are making the types of playing basketball more creative and not just shooting the ball, I related basketball to other activities that I illustrated in the Empathy which are marching and conducting a band. Then, my second and third Ideation were formed!
I started to do my Prototype which is truly making the toy. Luckily, all the resources were available in my house. I used almost four days for doing the toys without doing other stuffs at all. It is because I coloured the toy with poster three times so that the colour of the toy looked more attractive and solid. Then, after making the toy, I brought it to my grandma house to shoot the demonstration video with my little cousin. After the shooting part, I started to design my poster first then continued with the editing.
After showing to Mr Paul, he suggested that to place my poster in a phone icon because my poster is designed like Memes and it was totally fit in a phone icon. Then, I changed it and trimmed the video because it was too long and was already exceed one minute. After that, I continued the last part which is the Prototype because I skipped the arrangement part of all the pictures that I took. After arranging all the images, my work was done and I sent it to Mr Paul for checking. He approved it!
Reflection
I had some experiences already after doing two assignments so the progress was quick compared to the previous assignment. But, I could said this assignment was the toughest among three. The biggest challenge is the colouring the toy. It really took me so long because I wanted to make it looks more attractive so I needed to wait the toy became dry again after painting the layer. Then, I painted the second layer and I painted three layers for the whole toys. I learnt to arrange the slides and the poster. Really thanks to Mr Paul's advices so that my Poster can be done so well! I also learnt to combine the research that I had done with my own ideas and the Fully Manual Shooting Machine was produced successfully !
